This coastal home in Sydney’s sought-after Freshwater elegantly balances modern functionality with timeless natural design, capturing spectacular ocean views while offering the comfort and ease of relaxed family living.
The new residential build on Sydney’s Northern Beaches boasts 180-degree ocean views and was consciously designed to both highlight its breathtaking location and serve as a practical family home. With modern, natural design choices that complement its coastal position, Freshwater Residence achieves a sanctuary-like quality that aligns with the client’s vision for a timeless and elegant residence.
“The home’s ocean views and proximity to Curl Curl Beach were our primary inspiration. Rather than leaning into a predictable coastal aesthetic, we aimed to create a refined, modern residence that feels deeply connected to its environment,” says Naz Erani of Naz Design.
The team emphasised the significance of spatial design in this build, aiming to maximise the ocean views while creating a practical house that could evolve with the family’s needs. This was achieved by composing three distinct zones across the home’s three levels, each made to accommodate the client’s lifestyle while ensuring the overall layout remained cohesive and functional for daily living.
The exposed nature of the home called for deliberate and durable material choices. By prioritising natural elements such as quartzite, limestone and travertine, Naz Design was able to beautifully balance tactile texture with enduring quality. Pink Patagonia quartzite became the “hero material” of the build, selected for its timeless yet unique appearance. Timber veneers and warm flooring sections were also introduced to create a welcoming effect, with each material element working together to craft a thoughtful, multifaceted aesthetic that complements the natural beauty of the location while maintaining character and functionality.
Careful consideration was also given to the home’s spatial planning, with the kitchen and living areas becoming the focal point due to their incredible views and central position within the residence.
“There is a strong sense of fluidity in the design, from the sculptural form of the kitchen island to the soft curves and detailing in the joinery, all subtly influenced by the movement of the sea,” Erani says. “While the blue of the ocean is a dominant presence on this level, we carefully curated a complementary palette that enhances and balances those tones rather than competing with them.”
Great care has been taken to craft a home that feels both natural and inviting, allowing the interiors and views to exist in harmony. Through an integrated palette that complements the surrounding coastline without leaning into overdone coastal aesthetics, Naz Design has created a truly stunning residence. The team’s desire to “enhance and balance” the natural tones of the location is evident throughout, with comfort, connection to environment and functionality characterising the build. Ultimately, Freshwater Residence embodies the client’s vision for a timeless and elegant home – one that accommodates the everyday life of a growing family while offering a beautiful and enduring coastal sanctuary.
