Transmitt is devoted to crafting ageless luminaires that celebrate sculptural forms, natural materiality, craftsmanship and the ephemeral beauty of light itself.
Grounded in the quiet, transformative power of illumination, lighting studio Transmitt has evolved from founder Shaun Dudley’s personal fascination with light into creating a body of work that explores atmosphere, materiality and form. Under Dudley’s meticulous eye, the practice conceives each piece as an interplay of shadow and glow, object and experience.
Rooted in mid-century design principles articulated through a modern lens, Transmitt brings rich transformation to contemporary interiors through a range of hand-shaped pendants, wall lights and ceiling fixtures. Each piece is sculptural yet restrained, enduringly functional and deeply expressive.
At the core of the studio’s work is an unwavering commitment to craftsmanship. Lights are handmade in Australia by a team of skilled artisans with more than 30 years experience. Detailed attention is given to proportion, finish and assembly, with materials selected for their immediate beauty and their individual methods of evolving over time. Specialised ageing processes allow surfaces such as brass to develop patinas that deepen character. Each lighting piece, whether illuminating a residence or deepening mood in a cocktail bar or restaurant, matures alongside the space it inhabits.
The studio’s collection is unified by a language of clarity, elevated materiality and warmth. The 001 Linear pendant embodies restraint, its elongated brass form casting a continuous line of light that anchors and defines a room. In contrast, the 004 Bloomer pendant introduces softness, pairing a structured metal frame with a voluminous silk shade that comprises petite yet exuberant ruffles. Diffusing light into an atmospheric glow, the pendant’s undulating form is both coquettish and sumptuous.
Equally entrancing, the Hemisphere wall light pairs brass and frosted glass, balancing sculptural presence with subtle illumination to create depth that glows like a planet’s far-off moon. Across the collection, every design reflects an ongoing exploration of how light can shape mood, articulate space and elevate everyday environments.
Transmitt’s practice is additionally firmly rooted in collaboration. The Australian studio works with leading architects and interior designers locally and globally to realise cohesive and expressive spaces. From the dusky pink 004 Bloomer pendant hanging before a gleaming leather curtain at the historic Ayrburn precinct in New Zealand – a collaboration with Alexander &CO. – to refined wall lighting for Luchetti Krelle’s RAFI URBNSURF in Sydney’s Olympic Park and Mitchell & Eades’ design for French bistro Maison Bâtard in the Melbourne CBD, each partnership extends the studio’s design language into new contexts.
