Reinterpreted with minimalist, modern detailing, FT Greene Townhouse maintains the character of its historic façade but sees its interior completely reimagined to suit contemporary liveability. TBD Architecture & Design Studio ensures a natural connection with the surrounds is established to allow the seasons to direct the home’s ambiance.

Part of a famed row of Italianate brick houses in Ft Greene, Brooklyn, FT Greene Townhouse maintains a connection to its storied past whilst ensuring the current occupants can establish roots for the future. Wanting to live more openly with the surrounds whilst retaining the memory of the original home, the front facade is restored and an additional rear volume is created. Respecting the proportions of the original residence, the architect ensures the double-height space incorporates a generous living area that allows for an abundance of natural light to enter through the glazing.

Opening up to a private landscaped area, the new addition connects to a variety of retreat spaces, both inside and out. Home to a growing family, incorporating a level of flexibility into each space was key. With consideration towards the changing seasons, having both open and enclosed spaces throughout adds another layer of flexibility to the abode. Taking inspiration from the existing modernist proportions, the original volumes of the residence are reimagined using the same materiality and palette.

The phrase “jewel in a cardboard box” was coined by the client in the early stages of the reworking, who envisioned a polished, detailed interior that maintained its external charm and character. Integrating a new fireplace anchors the living room and imbues the space with a sense of warmth, which complements the original timber detailing, blending traditional and contemporary elements. The seamless integration of raw materials was also important in ensuring openness and natural light were emphasised in the interior volume.

Through a considered lens, FT Greene Townhouse is breathed with new life. By ushering the home into a more contemporary context, TBD Architecture & Design Studio seamlessly nurtures a connection between the past and present.
