Heritage German brand Gaggenau’s first entirely new built-in collection in almost 20 years brings together innovative technology with sculptural form, evolving kitchen appliances into statements.
It’s been almost 20 years since German luxury appliance brand Gaggenau introduced a new built-in collection. Now, it is launching the Expressive Series, a range of kitchen appliances both sculptural and functional, and which includes an oven, a combi-steam oven, combi-microwave oven, espresso machine, warming drawer and vacuum-sealing drawer.
Each appliance is defined by the collection’s visual philosophy: two frames, one circle, itself inspired by Bauhaus principles and minimalist architecture. An outer frame establishes the appliance in the space it’s installed, while an inner frame incorporates smoked glass over stainless steel; the circle refers to the sculptural, technologically advanced control ring, which offers the tactility of analog design with the functionality of digital. The ring responds to commands with haptics, bringing a sensory appeal to a digital command centre. “The materials and geometry have been refined – fewer visible screws, smoother joints and perfected surfaces,” says Sven Baacke, Gaggenau’s head of design. “Lighting also plays a significant role in this series.”
The 30” Wall Oven is the lynchpin of the series; it’s a professional-grade appliance designed to elevate the home-cooking experience. It boasts an industry-first hidden broiling element and a clever ventilation system that enhances cooling and safety, plus an artisan baking stone with a bottom heat that mimics the effects of a stone oven.
The collection’s other appliances are equally premium. The espresso machine is fully automatic and has 38 beverage types to choose from, with an electronic bean grinder and automatic descaler. Meanwhile, the combi-steam oven has 14 heating modes – including a sous vide option – and an optional full-surface hidden broiler. The combi- microwave oven is similarly versatile, with nine heating methods including dehydrating and low-temperature cooking. The culinary warming drawer is an asset to the home cook, with six heat levels, and allows for proofing dough, defrosting and maturing yoghurt.
The appliances are designed in Germany and made in Lipsheim, France by a team of craftspeople who finish every piece by hand. Each appliance features Gaggenau’s classic 1.5-millimetre brushed stainless steel with elegant chamfered edges. To ensure precision and useability, Gaggenau works closely with leading chefs to perfect its appliances and bring a professional precision to functionality.
The new series is designed for modern living, taking into consideration the unique contemporary requirements of open-plan living spaces; the Expressive Series ovens are easily integrated into fluid spaces. A heated air catalyser and a new convection-plus heating system mean no odour, heat, noise or smoke are emitted.
“This is a collection built for the cultural connoisseur – someone who values objects not just for what they do but for what they mean,” says Heather Ryan, head of Gaggenau North America. The Expressive Series represents Gaggenau’s continuing evolution, from its beginnings as a Black Forest nail forge in the 17th century to its first electric ovens in the 1930s and its pioneering innovations throughout the 21st century.
