A Graceful Expansion – Glenmore Residence by CM Studio
Enriching the home’s layered past, Glenmore Residence sees its original grandeur and scale enhanced with a refreshing and modern twist. CM Studio re-sculpts an ageing terrace house, celebrating its history through a considered and refined lens whilst expanding internal volumes and drawing focus to outward connections.
Synonymous with the architectural landscape of Sydney, Victorian terrace houses play an integral role in defining the character of streetscapes. Behind its heritage façade, Glenmore Residence is reworked to become a home that reflects its current custodians. The renovation sees the floor plan expanded to the rear, where a darkened volume extrudes outward and creates an opportunity to gather and be immersed within the landscaping. CM Studio aligns the history of the home with a contemporary sensibility and proposes alterations with restraint and precision.
Located in Paddington, the outer face of the home retains its original charm. Internally, however, the need for improved functionality drove the brief and the resulting design. As a reflection of today, the opened kitchen becomes the new heart of the home, where an elevation of its parts became key to the room’s convivial atmosphere. Connected to the dining space, the area also integrates detailing and finishes complementary to the home’s historic style.
Throughout the structure, original mouldings and cornicing are restored, whilst the modern addition to the rear reflects a clean-lined approach. The combination of old and new is deliberately celebrated as a mark of their respective times and are bound with a shared materiality. With thin steel and glass windows and doors hugging the outside of the new volume, the combined space feels open and immersed within the landscape. The use of darker elements adds a layer of drama to the home, matching the history and the overall stateliness of the structure.
