For the longtime owner of this 26-year-old townhouse, a close personal history with the late Ercole Palazzetti – the home’s original architect – meant any improvements needed to remain sympathetic to its character and style. Honouring the Italian influence inherent in its detailing, Smac Studio principal Shona McElroy began by drawing more daylight into the rooms, layering personal touches and colour to create an artful sense of liveliness.

Previously a U-shaped corner, the kitchen was moved into a more central position, where it now opens to the lush, established gardens. A substantial green granite island provides space to cook, gather and entertain, while a mirrored splashback reflects the greenery back into the room, strengthening the connection to the outdoors. A favourite colour of the homeowner, who is also a keen gardener, green echoes throughout the house – most noticeably in the olive living room cabinetry, pale green walls, olive shower tiling in the ensuite and the soft green, classically styled custom lounge in the media room adjoining the dining area.

Upon entering the residence, guests are greeted by a draped rattan console and sunburst mirror, setting the tone for a richly textured, vibrant aesthetic. The generously sized landing has been finished with an aubergine chequerboard floor, beautifully balancing the verdant palette while nodding to the home’s history. Aubergine continues in the guest bathroom, where a Viola marble vanity from Marble Hub takes centrestage alongside a chequerboard floor that matches the entry. In the elegant powder room, aubergine and gold William Morris wallpaper is paired with a vintage Murano mirror and Art Deco-style sconces.

In the living room, McElroy repositioned the fireplace to create a natural distinction between the dining and relaxation areas. The space celebrates the home’s classical architraves and moulding, pairing them with the timeless, organic form of a Christophe Delcourt coffee table, sheepskin-covered chairs, a geometric Bzippy ceramic side table and a leaf-shaped Bottega Gadda lamp.

With elevated views across the treetops and rooftops of Sydney’s east, this peaceful residence feels at one with its surroundings, with interiors tailored to the homeowner’s life, heritage and everyday joys.
