Merging the style of a loft apartment with the deep focus of a creative workspace, the Studio 11:11-designed Auckland headquarters of Grumley+Company reflect the business advisory group’s esoteric nature.

With a largely monochromatic palette, the intimate Ponsonby, Auckland, offices of business advisory group Grumley+Company appear at once moody and aspirational, inspiring deep thought and conversation. Studio 11:11’s dramatic design begins in the reception area, where sleek metal cabinetry is accompanied by the rough texture of chunky columns custom-finished in gravel and micro-cement. These provide display space for a curated collection of books, objects and artworks, lending points of interest and a sense of domesticity to the arrival space. The steel legs of a Tim Webber York bench seat are balanced against a soft leather seat in a rich olive tone, which speaks to the natural timber form of the reception desk.

The dark walls lend a cocoon-like quality to the workspaces within, encouraging focus and a sense of security for high-stakes meetings.

The dark walls lend a cocoon-like quality to the workspaces within, encouraging focus and a sense of security for high-stakes meetings and discussions. They also provide contrast and pride of place for the art on display throughout the offices, part of the considered collection of company founder Toss Grumley. The artworks are accompanied by an equally considered assortment of artisanal wares.

In the boardroom, Studio 11:11 delivers flexibility and privacy through a series of sliding, gridded metal screens. These can be retracted when the office is hosting events, enabling a singular open floorplan centred around a striking dappled marble column.

The concrete floor gives the spaces a largely industrial aesthetic, which is elevated by unique lighting features and artworks.

Underfoot, the grit of the aggregate in the polished concrete floor creates a sense of solidity and consistency, with organically toned Nodi rugs providing softness in seating areas. Along with the exposed ceilings, the concrete floor gives the spaces a largely industrial aesthetic, which is elevated by unique lighting features and artworks. The kitchen nook is also darkly finished, with a marble green countertop and the jagged edge of a stone splashback adding visual interest.

For a small space, these offices pack a lot of punch, with the high level of finish reflecting the reputation of the brand. By specifying local artisans and employing finishes that will naturally patina and age, Studio 11:11 has created a sense of timeless elegance that is also befitting the lineage of the office’s Ponsonby location.
