Homage to Craft – Harbour by Adam Goodrum
Featured in the nau 2021 collection, Adam Goodrum’s Harbour is a homage to craftmanship and comfort. Representing nau’s championing of local contemporary design and manufacturing, the Harbour collection is versatile in function and authentic in character.
As Cult’s in-house Australian design brand, nau offers a selection of curated products that are emblematic of authentic contemporary design. Suitable for residential and commercial spaces and designed and made within Australia, the nau 2021 collection features work by local industry leaders, celebrating refined quality and an understated elegance. Within this range, Adam’s Harbour collection is comprised of three warm, minimalist pieces. “Harbour comes from the desire to create a sofa collection of the highest quality and comfort and to capture the aesthetic of contemporary Australian life,” Adam explains.

Meeting the needs of modern-day living, Harbour is representative of rest, retreat and recovery and instils interiors with a tranquil familiarity. Locally manufactured by Rolf Barfoed in Canberra, Harbour is characterised by congenial quality. The homely selection includes a sofa, armchair and bed, inspired by an appreciation for sophisticated craft and a natural materiality that captures an Australian essence. The sofa’s delicate curves mirror the rounded pillows encased within the structure, encouraging intimacy and comfort.
Harbour focuses on specialist handcrafted techniques, specifically papercord wrapping and latticed leather strapped together to produce the highest quality joinery. “All components,” Adam says, “are revealed through honest assembly to celebrate the handmade, with the paper rope echoing the rigging of ships and its slouched cushions the relaxed attitude of a ship at dock.” Harbour features structural bows crafted from solid timber, as well as leather strapping latticed by hand; the handwoven papercord frame nods to 50s and 60s Scandinavian design while the sculpted silhouette speaks to a contemporary ambience.

Adam believes in storytelling through strong and durable design that can, in turn, define space. Through a celebration of craft and development, the award-winning designer continues to imbue furniture pieces with accentuated detail and character. As well as Harbour, Adam also expands nau’s commercial offerings with Softply, Don and Rib; pushing material boundaries and exploring a playful interplay of form, he creatively offers innovative responses to contemporary priorities.
