Kett’s considered furniture is the perfect complement to the design narrative of a rejuvenated 1930s Toorak residence.

Set in leafy Toorak in inner Melbourne, the 1930s Heyington Residence places quality craftsmanship at the heart of its design response and connects to its surrounds with the support of an inspired furnishing selection from Kett.

This connection was a critical motivation for the client, Jack Merlo, a celebrated landscape architect, and his family. Merlo invited Kett to furnish the home, building on their history of collaboration. The landscape architect is well-acquainted with the Kett brand, appreciating the quality of its pieces and its ‘indoors-looking-out’ identity. With the landscaping designed by Merlo himself, incorporating furniture that reflected the outdoors was the ideal way to create a harmonious blend between the interior and exterior spaces.

Primary living spaces are structured around curated views of a verdant gardenscape designed to bring the outside in. Kett’s considered furnishings complement the robust design narrative of context and place. The Portland region of Victoria provides the inspiration for key pieces integrated into critical moments of experience throughout the home; the finishes of each are selected for the tones, textures and silhouettes reminiscent of the rich natural environment.

To intentionally blur the boundary between interior and exterior, Kett’s Portland range establishes a subtle connectivity between the garden and the main living spaces of the home. The Feathertop sofa, designed and made in Melbourne, is defined by contemporary lines and volumes. Comfort is achieved with premium core materials, and customisable fabrics were selected for the home to support a neutral palette designed first and foremost to celebrate the stunning garden. (Customisation is a key Kett offering, with a wide range of lacquers, finishes and upholstery options.)

Drawing inspiration from the scenic bays of Portland, the forms and finishes of the Portland Arc coffee table assert the grace and elegance of a silhouette informed by the moment where land and sea meet as the sunlight drops below the horizon. A selection of contemporary lacquers, muted ceramics and stains of subdued tones are combined with rounded corner details and inset legs to allude to the locale after which the table is named. Here too, the Portland Arc coffee table is integrated with the design strategy for Heyington Residence to achieve a consistency throughout the project.

For Kett, the Australian landscape has always been the primary inspiration for distinctive furniture collections with a clear story of place. By drawing on the natural world to inform collections such as Portland, Kett’s beautifully considered pieces support the critical narrative of landscape weaved through Heyington Residence to elegant effect.
