Set against a landscape so naturally sculptural it could pass for an outdoor museum, the house doesn’t compete but rather asserts itself gently. The crisp geometric form settles into the site, looking out toward the San Jacinto Mountains and beyond. After camping on the land to read its natural signs and honouring the clients’ one unwavering instruction – “do not remove a single existing Pinyon tree” – Aidlin Darling Design has stitched a distinctly modern build into one of California’s greatest vistas.

High Desert retreat came together as a triptych of elements, nestled within a constellation of raw Palm Desert boulders.

Under the discerning eye of Joshua Aidlin – co-founder of Aidlin Darling Design and principal of the project – High Desert Retreat came together as a triptych of elements, nestled within a constellation of raw Palm Desert boulders. A singular roof plane, timber volumes and a pair of concrete walls help to articulate each zone, delicately testing the threshold of what it truly means to be inside or out.

A single floating roof plane hovers over the residence, offering much-needed respite from the beating sun as it shifts between solid cover and a porous timber lattice. Beneath it, seven rectilinear wooden structures hold the home. “Conceptually, they began as a singular mass that splits apart and slides out into the landscape to both maximise the experience of the surrounding terrain and to create critical open space in the centre of the home,” explains Aidlin. The blackened pine is acetylated, burnt, wire-brushed, stained and sealed. These treatments yield a highly textured and warm finish. “The parallel concrete walls provide a physiological permanence to the home that not only frame the entry but, most importantly, the heroic view.”

High Desert Retreat has matured into a home that brings immense joy to a family whose genuine spirit is felt in every aspect of its remarkable form.

Working with clients who were seeking a place to create memories with friends, Aidlin Darling Design leaned into the family’s knack for entertaining. Upon entry, a dramatic dining room sets the tone, with the ceremonial breaking of bread served from the adjacent kitchen and balanced by a living room opposite – complete with a custom bar for cocktail-making. As the night unfolds, each moment bleeds effortlessly into the next, shaping an unforgettable retreat. Together, these social spaces read as a singular lanai, inviting guests to relish nature around the clock. Natural light bathes every room atop the rocky plateau, from dawn through to dusk.

High Desert Retreat has matured into a home that brings immense joy to a family whose genuine spirit is felt in every aspect of its remarkable form. The throughline here is undoubtedly respect – for ideas, materials, impact and everyone involved.
