Complementing the relaxed lifestyle of Surfers Paradise, High Tide is a refreshing transformation of a beachfront apartment. A collaboration between multidisciplinary design studio Nexus Designs and architecture practice Bones Studio, the redesign connects the space to the natural surroundings and is elevated by refined furnishings.

One of 15 residences, High Tide is a large three-bedroom apartment with a terrace and a private pool. The brief was to give the interiors a relaxed feel, improve lighting and flow and create a greater connection with the surrounding ocean views. “Clear of their needs for the space, with assured design and style preferences, our team, led by associate Bridget Ryan, were able to respond to the client’s brief efficiently and effectively,” says Nexus Designs director Sonia Simpfendorfer.

Key to High Tide’s reimagination was creating a greater connection to the natural environment.

Key to High Tide’s reimagination was creating a greater connection to the natural environment. As such, the floor plan was reconfigured to welcome more flow and cohesion. The most substantial change to the floor plan was rejuvenating the original dark and cramped wedge-shaped kitchen. A U-shaped island was introduced and the working kitchen relocated away from the butler’s pantry – encouraging opportunities for gathering and entertaining. The bar area was also reimagined; high gloss Cappellini and wall-mounted units were introduced to create a seamless, functional space.

Considered choices in terms of materiality create a space that feels bright and fresh. A tonal and fresh colour palette is used for finishes – high gloss paint contrasts with textured paint on the walls, while dark stone tile flooring is replaced with oak timber. Panelling in the main bedroom has been removed and the walls painted with a bright natural white shade to evoke a laid-back, airy feel.

A similar neutral palette is used for furnishings, with contrasting blues and yellows complementing the site’s coastal location. Furniture is timeless and versatile and is used to maximise natural light. Sheer curtains, textured upholstery, handmade woven rugs and cushions feature throughout, while light, natural, breathable materials are used with the practical needs of the beachside lifestyle in mind. A bespoke selection of artwork has also been curated for the space with pieces by Australian, First Nations and international artists.

Nexus Designs and Bones Studio reimagine the apartment in a way that injects light, space and flow. As such, High Tide is the realisation of a seamless collaboration between two design studios with a shared vision for laid-back, elevated coastal living.
