Highbury Residence by Sync Architecture
In Highbury Residence, Sync Architecture goes above and beyond to create a family home of dynamic proportions. Utilising light, modern materials and curved elements, the renovated Victorian structure is an example of how dynamic design can completely transform a space.
Most recently acquired in 2022, Highbury Residence had been stripped of detail and character by previous occupants. Working with the owners, Sync Architecture ensured that the facade now celebrates the original lacework, mouldings and appearance to the streetscape, aligning with adjoining neighbours. Moreover, the new extension sits further back into the site, the interior of this volume starkly contrasting the heritage aesthetic to highlight a new era for the residence that feels both architecturally relevant yet timeless.
Inside, marble, concrete and timber are at play, weaving a home of immaculate detail and design. The material palette provides a consistency across all the spaces, echoing modern sensibilities and gentle luxury. Moments of pause are then created through a curved motif seen in hardware finishes, the kitchen island bench, the fireplace and arched doorways. These curves are a gentle reminder of the more ornate details of what would have appeared in the original home, presented in a more palatable contemporary context.
Light also plays an important role within Highbury Residence. The site is incredibly constricted, seeing the structure span boundary to boundary. Large arched windows provide ample opportunity for natural light and ventilation to enter the ground floor, whilst a central staircase allows a series of skylights to soften and draw light deep within. The staircase is also striking in its visual occupancy, speaking to both the home’s curved features and sturdy material form.

As a modern take on the humble family home, Highbury Residence is anything but ordinary. Sync Architecture uses an evocative material palette and an innate understanding of light to craft a home of lasting resonance and majestic character.
