Looking inward, Hopetoun Road sees the orchestration of a calm and restorative retreat for its owners, heightened through a nod to luxury. Kestie Lane Studio, together with architecture by BG Architecture, proposes two dwellings that intercept on site, devised with their own subtleties and uniqueness.

Amongst the generous allotments and tree-lined streets of South Yarra, Hopetoun Road is a fitting and welcomed modern addition, bringing a considered approach to its crafted parts. As a dual address, the lower level becomes one residence while, above, a two-level penthouse finishes out the building form. In both homes, a shared value of elevated living is expressed throughout, as well as a keen focus on connecting with the surrounding natural elements and bringing in as much light as possible. Combining a mixture of textural richness and natural stone, the spaces feel intentionally warm and familiar. Built by Sinjen, Hopetoun Road is crafted from an attuned attention to detail and rigour, focusing on a matched longevity. Upon entry, the experience mimics that of a gallery, with a generous and open feeling that is achieved through restraint, bringing the space together. This element of restraint is a defining factor of both homes, with a minimal and mostly monochromatic palette adopted throughout. Soft and grey toned walls create a calming base from which other complimentary layers circulate, ensuring a consistent binding. Polished concrete walls and the central stair offer a more weighted feel and anchor both homes in place, while a herringbone patterned timber connects to the handmade and adds an additional texture.

The extensive use of expressive stone in the bathrooms is counterbalanced with a softer vein found in the kitchen areas, creating unexpected moments of intrigue. Over the home’s total three levels, custom elements are integrated throughout to conceal amenity and allow a calm to radiate. Textural and plush carpets are then inlaid into the flooring, creating a deliberate and permanent imprint in the form, allowing blackened steel shelving to sit as framed sculptures, supporting a curated display.

Through a sense of embedded permanence, Hopetoun Road sees Kestie Lane Studio and BG Architecture carve a pairing of contemporary homes, both relevant and infused with a luxurious sensibility for the lives of their owners.
