Inspired by its outlook, Horizon an existing home that is extended up and outward to create a series of connections both internally and with the surrounding context. Shaun Lockyer Architects balances clearly defined rectilinear forms with extensive glazing to create a home with a distinct identity and relationship with the environment.

Located in Brisbane’s Teneriffe, an existing pre-war home is given a new breath of life. In opening the form of Horizon with multiple apertures, the creation of an additional level above allows for a generous combined living space to become part of the new works. With views out toward the horizon, the inspiration for the home’s name, a clear connection to such an enviable siting was important to the structure’s new chapter. Shaun Lockyer Architects creates transitions between the existing home and the added volumes to form a new identity for the residence that reflects its owners.

With views out toward the horizon, the inspiration for the home’s name, a clear connection to such an enviable siting was important to the structure’s new chapter.

Wanting to retain the original detailing and adornments of the existing home in the contemporary series of flowing spaces, a commonality to bridge the two eras was needed. The newer elements come together with a restraint and as a sensitive addition. Opting to present detailing through a controlled and deliberate refinement, the new feels like an evolution of the old.

Whilst the exterior of the home is cloaked in a series of dark colours and tones, the interior introduces a warmer approach, using timber to create a natural connection and add texture. Set within a lush and established landscape, the new works express a clear connection to nature. The integration of the in-ground pool brings a connection to a body of water into the sensory immersion of the home. Operable façade elements also allow and encourage ventilation to naturally cool the spaces.

Through a series of gestures that cantilever the home to engage more with the surrounds, Horizon is given a more attuned focus. Shaun Lockyer Architects reinterpret the traditional Queenslander typology, improving an existing home whilst retaining the original elements and integrating a new connection to place.
