Restrained Warmth – House E by CJH Studio
Imagined as a timeless and enduring residence, House E captures a robustness among a highly refined and carefully executed series of spaces. CJH Studio creates moments where classical finishes emerge in a contemporary sensibility to conjure familiar and enveloping warmth.
Located in Melbourne’s Elsternwick, House E balances the practicalities of daily life with an elevated luxury. The new interior reworks the existing home to reflect and capture the owners, carving an ideal backdrop for their coming chapters. As a reflection of taste and a statement of life stage, the materiality combines a natural focus with choices requiring minimal maintenance. CJH Studio proposes a minimal palette that is expressed through linear elements and a lasting resolve to create a heightened approach to the everyday experience of the home.
Having recently downsized from a much larger property, the owners wanted to bring a similar charm and detailed nature with them into the new space. As a neutral base, the resulting rooms are intended to remain relevant for many years to come, with an overlaying warmth tying the spaces together. A process of refinement forms the focus for the new home, drawing on priorities and a reassessment of the functions of the inner volumes.
Combining American oak, light marble and brass detailing, every element has been considered, with junctions and detailing expressed with precision. Due to the owners’ preference of traditional styling, retaining elements such as chandeliers, fireplace mantels and classical details was key. Reinterpreted through a cleaner and linear approach and crafted with the hands of modern artisans, the home deftly balances contemporary and traditional elements.
