Housing Choices Australia partners with Kennedy Nolan to interrogate the apartment density housing model and propose a new approach. The project proposes safe, quality and affordable housing that explores social, economic and environmental sustainability.

Exploring the apartment housing model from a macro level, the partnering between Kennedy Nolan and not-for-profit housing association Housing Choices Australia lays the foundations for a considered design approach with a focus on robustness, affordability and low maintenance. The project proposes housing that delivers from a multi-faceted approach – socially, economically and sustainably. In order to provide affordable housing, where residents also live within aspirational surrounds that encourage them to thrive, the design had to re-think the traditional approach to this sector. Although a challenging brief, the passionate team ensured the Dandenong-based apartment building is imbued with warmth, supportive amenity and integrated sustainability. Kennedy Nolan has combined a playful and colour-rich palette that brings together a clean contemporary yet familiar residential setting through its materiality and the resulting form. Together with Simon Ellis Landscape Architects and ESD consultant Sustainability House, Housing Choices Australia is a project as motivated as it is aspiring.
