Tucked among South Yarra’s eclectic architectural styles, Hyland Street is a warm and textural home that presents as a crafted and textural insertion into the streetscape. Bergman & Co. balances the anchoring masonry elements with the considered rhythm of openings, integrating a connection to light, air and landscape.

Concealed behind a defining hit-and-miss arrangement of brickwork, Hyland Street comes together as a unique offering of both precision and a refined granular approach. Carving its own presence among the existing diverse styles that comprise the area, the resulting home expresses a contemporary take on the solidity of brick, with openings that bring scattered light inward dotted across the façade. A unique perforated screen cloaks the home with a defining sense of enclosure and separation from the public realm, cocooning within yet connected to the outdoors. Once inside, the tone set by the protective outer shell carries a similar warmth and subtle grit throughout, seeing Bergman & Co. integrate a key robustness that also flows into the landscape.

Stretching the length of the site, a signature pool animates the heart of the home with its dynamic reflective qualities. The presence of water also acts to balance the warm materiality and earthy tones within the interior. As an extension of the encasing architectural skin, the palette within sees polished concrete flooring set the scene for the integration of bond-stacked brick and tiles, with the select use of timber also encouraging a natural connection. A shift in levels allows for the creation of a sunken living area that wraps around a dedicated fireplace. This opens the main convening and gathering area and aligns the space with its key function of bringing occupants and visitors together.

A linear language is present throughout, seeing the site and its narrowness become a key defining feature. The generous kitchen island matches the accompanying custom joinery in the kitchen, sitting parallel to the pool and staircase. The ground level opens to a small outdoor terrace space, which brings the landscape into the interior, allowing those long linear spaces to be naturally lit. Through the integration of skylights above, a façade that pulls completely away to help dissolve the boundary between inside and out, and a roof terrace with skyline city views, a connection to the surrounds is firmly embedded into the home’s narrative.

As a celebration of both its surrounds and past, Hyland Street focuses on quality and authentic materiality to enrich the everyday. Bergman & Co. ensures all elements on site act to reinforce the home as a unique and private retreat.
