Ikon Penthouse by Cameron Kimber Design

Achieving a design that celebrates the interior and exterior is an art that Cameron Kimber Design has perfected with Ikon Penthouse, a glamorous, 120-square-metre penthouse in Potts Point, Sydney.

Oriented towards Sydney Harbour on one side and the CBD on the other, the home provides a panoramic experience that culminates inward to the owner’s prized collection of objets d’art. The home exudes a sense of luxury, courtesy of bespoke finishes, fabrics and treatments that create a cocooning effect. In a bid to draw attention to the art both inside and outside – namely the skyline and the owner’s collection respectively – Cameron Kimber Design pared down the palette, enhancing the walls with Venetian plaster and the floors with timber herringbone.

“The design approach was to create a sense of scale,” says Kimber, who began by carving out a large entrance hall – enlivened with a lacquered Spanish bureau, contemporary art and the owner’s collection of oriental figures – and removing an existing laundry to make room for a monolithic helix staircase by architect Daniel Boddam, which was deliberately muted to highlight the metallic chandelier.

The studio incorporated the monochrome theme into the living room, outfitting the custom chairs and sofas in hushed fabrics and introducing a custom, mirrored cube coffee table of Kimber’s own design. As for the kitchen, he introduced drama with pale timber joinery, metallic hardware, Calacatta Viola benchtops and splashbacks, as well as a custom leather banquette that provides a cosy perch on lazy Sunday mornings. Meanwhile, the living room was conceived to take advantage of the sweeping vistas.

If the bedrooms are any indication, it’s clear that the studio’s neutral approach was limited to the common areas. Enveloped by green velvet walls and featuring a custom scalloped headboard, the primary suite is an eclectic jewel box, framing the stunning cityscape beyond. The bathrooms, while mellower, are similarly luxurious, with gleaming marble counters, tiled walls and antique sconces sourced by the owner from Europe, serving as sparkling sun catchers.

The aim was to visually optimise the footprint of the penthouse to make it feel larger than it was. With infinite views on either side, an illusion of boundless openness and an enhanced sense of scale, it’s an objective Cameron Kimber Design clearly achieved.
