Nightworks Studio
Nightworks Studio approaches lighting with a clear vision: to create pieces that add depth and character to spaces rather than just illuminate them.
Known for its refined design language and meticulous craftsmanship, the Christchurch-based studio produces high-end lighting solutions that enhance interiors with a thoughtful and lasting impact. Each Nightworks Studio piece is designed in-house, combining the finest materials with advanced technology to create lighting that feels distinctive and enduring. With a philosophy rooted in considered innovation, the studio strikes a delicate balance between pushing creative boundaries and honouring its existing designs. This approach allows designers and architects to integrate the studio’s range seamlessly across diverse projects, offering versatility that adapts to different spaces while maintaining a strong design identity.
This ethos is exemplified in Carmélites, a 19th-century townhouse in Brussels, Belgium, reimagined by RG architectes. Nightworks Studio’s Tasman Double pendant is featured in the minimalist kitchen, where natural light floods the space through a new internal staircase and skylight. As evening falls, the pendant’s soft, white Salt finish introduces a gentle, ambient glow that enhances the kitchen’s warm wood panelling. The understated design effortlessly integrates with the home’s layered history, adding a quiet sense of balance as the space transitions from day to night.
At the Shuijing Room at Cāntīng in Auckland’s Commercial Bay, the La~De~Da pendant brings a refined touch to chef-restaurateur Nic Watt’s modern Chinese eatery. Realised by Izzard Design, this private dining space merges traditional influences with a contemporary edge. The La~De~Da pendant in Ember complements the room’s curated ambience, adding an inviting glow that fits perfectly with Cāntīng’s vision of modern dining with a luxurious twist.
Back in Christchurch, Nightworks Studio’s craftsmanship takes centrestage in the waterfront Redcliffs Residence. Collaborating with W2, the studio created a bespoke, five-metre-long Code Cascade pendant that serves as both a source of light and a sculptural element. Handmade in the studio’s Christchurch workshop, the pendant features warm, white, mouth-blown globes, Ōamaru limestone and Midnight Brass suspension rods. Positioned within a blackened-steel staircase, the pendant creates a captivating interplay of light, materiality and architecture.
Through projects that range from historic homes to contemporary commercial spaces, Nightworks Studio has consistently demonstrated over the past decade how lighting can shape atmosphere. Its work typifies how a considered approach to light can introduce a sophisticated and welcoming layer to interiors, enhancing the experience of its occupants.
With an unwavering focus on innovation and quality, Nightworks Studio continues to refine its approach to lighting, creating pieces that contribute to spaces in a way that feels cohesive, inviting and genuinely well considered.
