T. Black Atelier
Collection 01 marks the debut furniture series of T. Black Atelier designer, director and founder Tom Black, representing a convergence of his interior architecture, material experimentation and Italian sojourns.
Informed by designer Tom Black’s desire to create objects as refined as they are effortless, the Collection 01 series takes cues from Italy’s variegated palette, patinated warmth and rooftop and cathedral dome silhouettes – but does so with restraint. These pieces reinterpret Italian tonal subtleties and sculptural clarity for contemporary Australian living.
“This collection is my first step into creating pieces that reflect my own experiences and influences.”
“For years I’ve designed spaces for other people – this collection is my first step into creating pieces that reflect my own experiences and influences,” Black explains.
Exploration of form and materiality sit at the series’ centre, guided by the belief that everyday objects should feel warm, grounded and intentional. Softened edges appear where they are least expected as traditionally rigid materials – stainless steel, marble, brushed metals – become fluid, approachable silhouettes. Exaggerated proportions are balanced with a sense of ease, producing timeless pieces that feel as though they have always belonged.
Coffee Table 01 introduces the collection’s sculptural tone. The subtle curvature of the stone base imbues the piece with a sense of floatiness, while the metal-finish inlay reverses the expectation of weight, drawing the eye to both mass and momentary lightness. Its companion piece, Side Table 01, mirrors this exploration but shifts the gesture: a rectangular base introduces a subtle tension, highlighting how form alters perception.
The Ghezzi chair, inspired by the curvature of a store sign in Rome, recalls the fluidity of cursive script, looping gently over a steel frame like an undulating ribbon. Upholstered in rich, warm hues – copper, moss, chocolate, brass – the piece becomes both a sculptural accent and an expression of lived-in elegance.
Soft architecture continues in Sofa 01, where arches and domes inform an enveloping form made for real living: low-sun afternoons, unhurried moments, daily rituals. Offered in velvet, olefin and a cotton-linen blend with palettes drawn from Tuscan earth tones, it pairs heritage with contemporary restraint. Lounge Chair 01, a smaller yet more pronounced sculptural gesture, takes the same architectural cues but stands proudly as an object of its own – modern, grounded, quietly commanding.
The Tulip chair pushes hardest at the boundary between structure and sculpture. With an orbital brushed-stainless-steel frame and deep verde marble accents, it forms a study in opposites: hard materials shaped with softness and soft forms defined by architectural precision.
Such material dialogue continues in the Oval coffee table, where Sottsass grey timber veneer meets walnut and brushed stainless steel. Sweeping legs reference the arcs of Italian piazzas, anchoring the piece in both playfulness and solidity. Completing the collection, the Tetto side table layers walnut with textured glass, its geometry echoing the rooftops and cityscape of Florence.
From Italy’s roughened stone to the green of its pines and its golden sunlight, Collection 01’s palette and perspective is timeless. Black’s assured debut is cohesive, individual, contemporary and resonant with the past.
