Transportive Natural Setting – Jardin d’Eden by Luigi Rosselli Architects and Vivienne Hannigan
The latest expansion of Jardin d’Eden pays an honourable homage to its original Queen Anne-style heritage while amplifying connections to the surrounding garden. Luigi Rosselli Architects and Vivienne Hannigan ensure the architectural and interior design is a fitting accompaniment to such a treasured landscape setting by Myles Baldwin Design.
Building upon a previously established working relationship, Luigi Rosselli Architects and the owners of Jardin d’Eden were reunited for this latest chapter of additions and amendments, further overlaying their personal touch throughout the home. Focusing on the garden and taking advantage of having a private, natural space within such close proximity to the CBD of Sydney, Vivienne Hannigan ties the interior design to the surrounds. What was originally only a bungalow form on the site has expanded to encompass an additional level and the new works, which aim to connect more meaningfully to the natural elements.
Enviably, the home sits amid dense landscape and greenery, and creating specific vistas from the inside to out was key to foster a reminder of place. Myles Baldwin Design creates a series of dedicated destinations within the outdoor space for retreat – aligning with the differing functions of family life and entertaining. In referencing the Garden of Eden as it’s muse, the intentional connection between the landscape to the home was an integral and driving part of the brief. Steel-lined windows, doors and openings help frame and direct views outward, fulfilling this goal.
Underpinning the overall approach is an atmosphere of calm and retreat. A palette of muted yet warm neutrals is used among the restored heritage fireplaces, balustrades and rooms. Each space on the ground floor deliberately opens and flows into the garden, inviting the landscape into the home and defining the experience of the interior as one absorbed in nature. Respect for the past is felt through a timeless approach to the finishes and the forms used throughout, creating a harmonious balance between heritage and modern insertions.
