Surrounded by the vibrancy and movement of nature, the garden is an ideal place to show one’s true colours. Built to last through all manner of weather and with optimal comfort and stability, French outdoor furniture specialists Fermob deliver a wide range of tones and shades to reflect surrounding landscaping and architecture. Helping designers and individuals to express themselves, Fermob’s range extends beyond furniture to include accessories such as lighting, which provides further opportunities to imbue spaces with colour and personality.
From its roots as a metal table and chair manufacturer, Fermob has become renowned the world over for its extensive expertise in colour, developing a remark-able range of colours to enliven and personalise design concepts. Delivering unique designs –which are conceived and manufactured from the Fermob headquarters in Thoissey, France – the company prides itself on having an extensive range of colours to choose from, able to be mixed and matched to suit any space. New colours are released seasonally to reflect the evolution of style, whilst more traditional tones remain on hand for those areas that require a classical touch. Recent developments by the brand have seen the release of a dazzling rainbow effect as well as a subtle palette of cool monochromes.
Indeed, though metal furniture is essentially time-less, it can look highly contemporary when given a burst of brightness. In a garden patio or landscaped deck area, where natural colour can be abundant, using a bold shade that pops against those provided by shrubs and flowers can add liveliness whilst capturing the true personality of the homeowner. These bolder hues may appear too loud when used indoors, but beyond the con-fines of the home, they can really shine. Colour can also be used to create visual connections, for instance by choosing green chairs for a seating arrangement in a verdant garden, or an oceanic blue outdoor sofa in a setting with sea views.
Created through a collaboration with Fermob’s paint manufacturer, Axalta, Lapilli Grey is the brand’s official colour of 2023. A mix of two grey tones with a speckled appearance, Lapilli has a sense of depth that derives from its texture. This duality allows it to enhance other colours, looking especially effective when matched with green tones such as Fermob’s Cactus or Rosemary. Adjacent to brighter colours, it has the effect of appearing like concrete, lending a nuanced contemporary aesthetic. When paired with other monochromatic shades, it instead gives due emphasis to the design of the furniture.
Painted in-house using a highly advanced and eco-friendly system, Fermob’s range delivers that certain je ne sais quoi to outdoor spaces, which can be very personal, explains Fermob Colour Specialist Marion Bouvet. “Each person has their own desires for the design of an outdoor space – and depending on the colours chosen, the result will be different,” she says. “That’s the magic of colours; they are intelligent, stimulating and have the ability to set the tone of an exterior. And by adding a single new shade, you canal ways tell new stories.”
