The architect carefully restores the original ornate detailing of JW Residence’s Victorian-era origins while overlaying a contemporary relevance through both the planning and a new, light palette.

The architectural language of many initial suburbs surrounding Melbourne sees reminders of a Victorian-era influences remain as testament to the areas’ beginnings. This sees the transformation of JW Residence from its tired and separated self into a more contemporary and open family home, engaging its surrounds and site to a fuller extent. Sitting as part of a series of row houses in the eclectic surrounds of Prahran, with access to both the more bustling activity of the main streets and a heavily residential area, the home sits between the two worlds as a place of calm retreat. As is the case with many terrace homes, creating a sense of individual identity is key. The focus therefore is drawn into the interior, where the elements that are interacted with daily are reworked to ensure an elevation of what existed prior to match modern function. Opening the existing separated zones was integral in creating greater access to natural light and an enhanced perception of space. A mostly dichromatic base palette is used throughout, with layers of texture integrated to add subtle details.

Wanting to carry the original stateliness of the home into the present, refinement of detailing and the use of quality finishes and materiality throughout ensures longevity. The approach to restoring the existing structure, retaining delicate detailing throughout and incorporating a clean and light selection of finishes allows the home’s eras to harmoniously coexist. The replanning of the interior allows a better sense of flow and shapes the next chapter of the home with an open, outward-facing approach.
