Calm Restraint – Kew Residence by Jack Fugaro
Replacing a single residence on a shared allotment, Kew Residence takes form as a pair of detached homes, matching in their calm introversion. Jack Fugaro composes the new forms from a base of solid masonry and brutalist principles, allowing each to strike their own presence in the streetscape.
Subtle in texture and tone, a palette of enduring finishes and solid elements ensures Kew Residence’s presence is distinct among the neighbouring homes. Immersed within the lushly landscaped surrounds of Kew, the contrast created between the architectural built elements and the more softened natural landscape offers a refreshing insertion in place. Having developed a relationship from previously working together, Jack Fugaro and the owners forge a definitive approach that ensures an enduring resolve.
Each gesture within the landscape and entry sequence leads to a home that is greater than the sum of its parts. Whilst the base of the structure and outer shell of the home is formed from concrete blockwork and textural brick, glass openings are framed by clearly defined blackened boxes that project outward from the overall mass. Once inside, a sense of refinement is elevated through considered junctions, joinery, openings and an overall connected flow between the spaces. A feeling of lightness and enclosure then creates a retreat-like atmosphere.
Optimising its proximity to the Yarra River, Kew Residence focuses on harnessing uninterrupted views and fostering a natural connection. Whilst the tight allotment is carefully allocated to the two new properties, each home is awarded its own secluded outdoor area and holds a boundaryless transition between inside and out. Spread over two levels, the open and minimalistic project features sightlines that hero the views of the surrounding landscape and improves access to natural light.
