Textured and Moody – King Street Residence by Studio Amble
Inspired by the vibrant and lively milieu it sits amongst, King Street Residence responds to its context through boldness and heightened detail. Studio Amble combine a refined approach with contrasting natural and hand-worked elements to create a textured and moody abode in Prahran.
Tucked into the eclectic and vibrant streets of Prahran, King Street Residence stands responding to its context while offering its owners a space of bold and confident gestures, reflecting its own personality. The refurbishment process sees the complete reworking of the interiors of an existing space, which has been stripped back to its fundamental core. From this literal blank canvas, layers of interest and depth are added into the space, creating a home of resounding purpose and meaning, connecting its owners to their own unique abode. Studio Amble has combined a highly detailed approach, bringing together refined and hand-crafted pieces to further emphasise the home as its own individualised piece of Melbourne.
The clear and close collaboration between builder, client and designer sees a cohesive approach throughout, where every detail has been considered. With all existing wall partitions removed, the empty shell of the apartment allowed a starting point without any pre-existing distractions to tamper its future potential. As a downsizing exercise, the inspiration was to create a pied-à-terre that allowed for occasional use, in an area surrounded by interesting and activated amenity and within close range of the CBD. Originally a two-bedroom space, the new masterplan transformed the floor plan into a more generous one-bedroom apartment with accompanying ensuite, storage and entertaining space.
The use of materiality and the dividing elements all deliberately hint at a more generous space than actually exists. The mechanisms used create illusions of a much grander space, as do the crafted and handmade custom pieces that inject a heightened sense of luxury. The considered integration of contrasting and highly detailed elements ensures the resulting space is not compromised and embodies its own sense of character. A palette of contrasting and monochromatic tones is used, together with handmade tiles, oak parquetry flooring, natural stone and fluted glass elements to add variety in texture and opacity, adding depth and responding to the heritage of the building it sits within.

King Street Residence takes elements of its client’s persona and manifests them into a physical expression of self. Studio Amble has carved a uniquely individual apartment that reflects its equally eclectic and embracing locale.
