LB’s Record Bar
A stellar audio experience shaped the design brief for Merivale’s first Melbourne outlet, LB’s Record Bar, a Japanese kissa-inspired venue in the heart of the city.
Sydney hospitality giant Merivale has expanded south, opening its first Melbourne venue, LB’s Record Bar, at the end of 2025. The retro-futuristic-themed venture, the work of Merivale’s in-house design team, is located in the city’s iconic Meyers Place laneway, between Bourke and Little Collins streets.
With both lingering and listening key priorities, LB’s is the “kind of bar you stumble into and instantly want to stay,” says Nasim Koerting, Merivale’s design director. “We wanted warmth, nostalgia and a sense of discovery, like the design has always been there but you’ve discovered a gem in the heart of the city.”
A facade of green-tinged mosaic tiles gives the venue stand-out street appeal, as do a series of wall-mounted tables – illuminated by ambient, mushroom-shaped lamps – and whimsical orange stools. The interior is anchored by an original horseshoe-shaped bar, restored to its former glory and modernised with a timber and terrazzo top. Plush carpet, velvet upholstery, warm earthy tones, rose-hued strip lighting and the “subtle shimmer from mirror balls” create an intimate, retro mood.
Custom-built oversized speakers and walls lined with hundreds of vinyl records convey the bar’s intention – a space where the auditory experience is prioritised. “Music was our starting point,” says Koerting. “Everything radiates from the idea of a bar built around the ritual of playing records. There are acoustic treatments on all surfaces and materials used in an interrelating and unusual way. It is designed to feel both nostalgic and yet new.”
The agave-focused drinks list makes for a fine supporting act, and is the work of husband-and-wife team Zara and Michael Madrusan of The Everleigh and Bar Margaux fame. Together, music and drink combine to reflect Merivale’s driving ambition – to create spaces that feel transportive, tactile and relaxed.
