Collaborating with Leonard Joel for its new national headquarters and saleroom in Hawthorn, Melbourne, Studio Doherty has created something distinctly contemporary, reflecting the changing nature of the auction business.

“The auction house of the future is multi-faceted, welcoming people digitally as well as in real life,” says Mardi Doherty, director of Studio Doherty. Set over two levels, the new headquarters features large galleries and salerooms, along with modern offices and client rooms. “Our vision was to design a fearlessly contemporary space by delivering the most dynamic live and virtual experiences in the country,” says John Albrecht, Leonard Joel chairman and head of Important Collections.

“Our vision was to design a fearlessly contemporary space by delivering the most dynamic live and virtual experiences in the country,” says John Albrecht.

Across the two floors, Studio Doherty has designed each room to serve as a backdrop to Leonard Joel’s vast, covetable collections of antique furniture, fine art, jewellery and decorative objects. Clients are encouraged to pass through these areas to view the incredible pieces or enjoy a drink in the bar before entering a theatrical and immersive auction room. The property also features separate online auction rooms with state-of-the-art lighting controls and technology that enhance the digital experience. “With the digital marketplace accounting for more than half of total auction sales in the previous financial year, we are continually looking to embrace new digital technologies to complement our traditional auction models,” says Albrecht.

To further showcase Leonard Joel’s collection while drawing upon the grandeur of 19th-century galleries, Studio Doherty has employed a colour palette of deep greens, dark blues and mustard yellows. By boldly fusing colour with high-end design, the renowned interior studio has created a modern space that celebrates both skill and quality, one where Leonard Joel can confidently look to the future while also honouring its traditions.
