LPS Residence takes its musings from the surrounding rural elements and comes together as a grounded, bold statement within the landscape. Davidov Architects focuses on the textural and subtle qualities of the comprising materiality to introduce an openness that enhances the overall sense of scale.

From approach, LPS Residence sets an ambitious tone. Replacing an existing structure on site, the proposed form is a sculptural addition amid the natural surroundings and sets itself apart from the existing vernacular. The Mornington Peninsula – where the home is located – has seen a significant growth in recent years, ultimately changing the urban fabric as a result. Although still predominantly connected to the nearby coast, there exists an interesting mix of styles as a result. Looking toward Mexican- and Brazilian-inspired brutalist forms, Davidov Architects proposes a weighted series of interconnected forms that are solid and balance the natural elements.

Divided into three zones – living, sleeping and dining – the home is a composition of forms that interact with each other in different capacities. Adjacent to a central courtyard space, the private and protected outdoor area emphasises an atmosphere of retreat with an almost transportive quality. Throughout, all internal volumes have been shaped to draw the eye up and outward, and the mass of the exterior form provides a clear separation from public and private.

The design style of the home’s exterior is brought inward to create a calming atmosphere through cohesion. The ochre-coloured cement render aims to disguise the outer form within the landscape and an internal warmth is created through the inclusion of timber, terracotta finishes and custom furniture. Exposed rafters act as a reminder of the supporting structure and help to foster a quiet and meditative inner experience as light comes in from skylights and deeply revealed windows.

Celebrating the agricultural nature of buildings in the area, LPS Residence is both robust and tactile. Davidov Architects utilises contrast and a confidence of form to craft the resulting home that represents a departure from the typified urban residential condition.
