LUME House
This artful, sophisticated home in Melbourne exemplifies the care and expertise inherent in architectural builder Thomas Archer’s integrated, collaborative approach.
In a leafy enclave of Melbourne sits LUME House, where light, space and materiality work effortlessly together. Those qualities are the hallmark of architectural builder Thomas Archer’s Landmark Custom Design offering, where architects, interior designers and construction experts collaborate from a project’s inception to ensure homes are beautiful, functional and perfectly aligned to the client’s vision and lifestyle.
LUME House is a striking expression of this, with its elevated aesthetics, focus on craftsmanship and suitability for contemporary living. “At LUME House, our goal was to create spaces that are as functional as they are beautiful,” says principal architect Brendan McDowell. “Every space is designed to support family life and entertaining while celebrating materiality, detail and effortless flow.”
This intention begins at street level, with the home’s elegant facade. Composed of pale handmade bricks and exposed structural steel, its clean lines, deep reveals and subtle texture give the residence a calm, modern presence. Intricate detailing – such as the sculptural brass door handle and rich walnut cladding – brings craftsmanship to the forefront.
Stepping into the grand and generous entry, the soaring 3.3-metre ceiling draws the eye upwards and amplifies the ground floor’s sense of airiness. A sculptural staircase with custom balustrade and open treads sweeps between all three levels and funnels natural light into the home. Chevron oak flooring guides you into the open-plan living, dining and kitchen zone, where floor-to-ceiling sliding doors retract discreetly into a brick feature wall, allowing access to the alfresco entertaining area and pool. The formal lounge room, at the opposite end of the house, opens to a gorgeous landscaped courtyard.
The interiors were led by Aimee Tarulli of Archer Interiors, who drew inspiration from European homes to craft a refined and understated atmosphere. Spaces are characterised by a soft neutral palette and warm walnut joinery – most notably in the primary suite’s custom feature wall. Profiled kitchen cabinetry with gold-hued pulls adds a touch of luxury, as does the concealed bar, enclosed by steel-framed glass doors. Throughout, the gentle curves of the furnishings contrast with the architecture’s linearity, alongside statement pieces such as Murano glass side tables, which appear like delicately carved ice sculptures.
“All the interior details were given their moment, celebrated throughout the home and thoughtfully merged to create a beautiful, timeless design.”
Calacatta Viola stone is the home’s showpiece, bringing a dramatic, artistic presence to the kitchen, bar, fireplace and ensuite. Its striking burgundy and violet veining also finds subtle echoes in the plum-toned rug and warm, neutral-toned drapery. “All the interior details were given their moment, celebrated throughout the home and thoughtfully merged to create a beautiful, timeless design,” says Tarulli.
With a highly specialised and thoughtful approach, Thomas Archer has created a calm and cohesive home that not only looks spectacular but skilfully meets the needs of modern family life.
