Melbourne furniture studio Made by Morgen was founded by Nick McDonald in 2014, inspired by his love of Scandinavian mid-century design and a desire to combine his practical experience working in construction with a creative pursuit.

Now with a small team (including trusty blue heeler Roscoe) based from their workshop in Brunswick, Made by Morgen have become renowned as one of Melbourne’s most sought-after furniture designers and makers. Combining the beauty of mid-century Danish design principles with a contemporary approach to timber furniture, Made by Morgen was founded on an ethos of sustainability and minimalism in both aesthetic and production.

The beauty of timber such as American white oak and European beech is celebrated through a simplicity and clarity of form that unites every piece, be it a custom commission or a design from the Made by Morgen collection. Nick’s commitment to traditional craftsmanship (embedded during his time spent in the Onecollection workshop in Denmark) and deep knowledge of materials’ history means that each piece from Made by Morgen is not only made to last, but to tell a story.

Made by Morgen also bring to their work an emphasis on social responsibility, focused on giving back to and supporting the local community. In the studio’s first years of operation, Nick auctioned a sideboard to raise over $2,000 for Road to Refuge, a volunteer-run not for profit.
