Generational Legacy – Madison Square by Kate Nixon
The result of merging contemporary relevance into a classically conceived home, Madison Square receives a reconfigured sense of flow between inside and out, and past and present. Celebrating the home’s narrative, Kate Nixon weaves the traditional detailing with a muted neutral base to open and align the functionality of spaces.
Spread across multiple levels, Madison Square is reworked to cater for increased occupation. The grand home, featuring six bedrooms and five bathrooms, is sculpted through a modern lens, seeing the spaces embedded with added flexibility of function. With access to expansive harbour views in the distance, the Sydney home is both secluded and set back from the street frontage whilst maintaining its presence as a prominent and enduring totem. In a close collaboration between interior designer Kate Nixon and Dean Spano of iBuild Group, the vision of the home is brought to life and carefully retains a connection to craft through the process.
The curated and measured approach to how each of the internal elements come together aims to redefine the art of family living, weaving a heightening of the everyday and a pragmatic approach.
With the foundations set within a decades-old framework, moments of compression and release are created through innovative interior design to instil points of intimacy and openness within the home. Aspiring to live an outdoor lifestyle, the owners wanted boundaryless transitions between inside and out, with the surrounding landscape acting as a series of outdoor rooms. Having travelled extensively, the owners also wanted to instil a global sensibility and outdoor connectedness through selections of artwork, lighting and furniture.
Bringing additional light further down into the core areas of the home, open skylights and additional openings help illuminate the interior and allow access to natural ventilation. The curated and measured approach to how each of the internal elements come together aims to redefine the art of family living, weaving a heightening of the everyday and a pragmatic approach. Acting as a private and retreat-like sanctuary, despite its location within such a large city, the home is place of recharge for the owners. Harmonising the coming together of tradition with innovation, with areas dedicated to integrating fitness, wellness, relaxation and entertainment, the brief saw a complex and layered series of requests weave themselves together. The collaborative synergy among the works of local and international artisans decorating the interior spaces then adds another layer of richness.
