Showcasing contemporary architecture infused with a traditional sense of warmth, Maison Orford is as vibrant and dynamic as its woodland setting. Designed by Thellend Fortin Architectes, this award-winning project captures a distinct architectural language, creating a beautiful connection between the structure and its environment.

Located next to Orford National Park in southeastern Quebec, Maison Orford is immersed in a wooded mountain landscape. The design embraces the topography, beginning with a winding promenade that leads through the trees, emphasising the transition from public road to private land. Perched on elevated ground, the house offers views of the stunning surroundings. Experientially, there is a difference between the outdoor residential spaces and indoor realms; a projected canopy and perimeter gallery draw residents deeper into the forest, while double-height interior rooms evoke the feeling of being elevated among the treetops. The dynamic nature of the architecture is defined by clean lines and an interplay of forms, voids, projections and recesses.

Echoing the tripartite composition of the surrounding woodlands, Maison Orford is organised into three levels: the garden level, first floor and bel étage. The garden level is inspired by the roots of a tree, anchoring the home with a series of intimate, nurturing spaces. In contrast, the open-plan first floor is loosely zoned by furniture, with transitions between living areas evoking the sensation of walking through the forest. The upper level, tucked beneath the roof, offers a tranquil retreat with bedrooms that frame views of the woodland. The mezzanine also overlooks the dining area, providing a sense of spaciousness. A sculptural metal staircase connects the three floors, allowing residents to traverse the home along a smooth, diagonal path.

Throughout Maison Orford, the design reflects a thoughtful and logical creative process. Heating and cooling systems are discreetly concealed behind wall coverings and false ceilings, with an underfloor system incorporated into the former, enhancing the home’s functionality while minimising clutter. Worktops and storage units are integrated in the same spirit. Externally, the wood cladding and metal panels echo the region’s architecture, while the interior material palette – featuring waxed concrete, varnished timber, polished marble and glass – maximises natural light. To reduce the home’s impact on the site, the structure is built upon the foundations of a previous building, parts of which could not be retained. Despite its expansive footprint, the dwelling’s compact interior design achieves an energy-efficient result.

Warm and contemporary, the home’s design language is perfectly suited to life in a mountain environment.
