Malvern East House by Pipkorn Kilpatrick and Picnic Design Studio
Carrying the warmth and character of the original Bungalow-style home into the new iteration of Malvern East House, Pipkorn Kilpatrick and Picnic Design Studio were the ideal pairing to complete the clients’ vision. The residence emerges as a honed and attentive appreciation of craft that is light, open and in tune with the surrounding natural elements.
For Malvern East House, a vision was realised: to expand the home’s footprint, forge deeper internal connections and blend more holistically with the surroundings. Adapted for modern living, the existing spaces were reimagined to embrace a sense of openness. The collaboration between Pipkorn Kilpatrick and Picnic Design Studio was purposeful, aligning processes and values. The overall design intent was to honour the dwelling’s heritage while enhancing functionality, space and aesthetic.
Maintaining the original form, the addition nestles behind the front rooms, strategically relocating the main living spaces to the north to maximise natural light and temperature control. The bungalow section of the home now houses four bedrooms, each its own secluded sanctuary set apart from the social zones towards the rear. Throughout both old and new sections, a palette of light, warm hues prevails, with timber accents nodding to the residence’s heritage while introducing a tactile, natural element indoors.
To symbolise the transition from the old into the new, a bridged link was created, inviting the landscape into the home as well as introducing additional light to mark this shift. Framed vistas also offer glimpses of the landscape that the living area seamlessly opens up to. Respect for the original structure and architectural scale remains key. While the addition is defined by layered textures and warm tones that accentuate the internal volumes, masonry grounds the overall dwelling in place. And above the addition, a clerestory window floods the spaces with natural light, reducing a reliance on external energy sources.
Pipkorn Kilpatrick and Picnic Design Studio present Malvern East House as a comfortable and warm family home. Natural illumination graces every space, seamlessly integrating the addition and new features into the existing residence, as if they were always meant to be there.
