An Exuberant Exhibit – Melbourne Show+Tell Event by DesignByThem
Bringing a vivacious showcase to Melbourne in celebration of the brand’s 15th year, DesignByThem presented a discerning selection of Australian designs at their Show+Tell event in May. The exuberant exhibition of new and well-loved pieces marked the brand’s inaugural solo show in Melbourne as one to remember.
Brimming with a prodigious display of home-grown talent, the collection at Show+Tell embodied the lively expression of contemporary Australian perspective. Formed in 2007, DesignByThem was seeded by industrial designers Sarah Gibson and Nicholas Karlovasitis with the intention to craft playfully timeless products that would serve and delight their users. With a focus on creating authentically Australian and environmentally conscious pieces for local and overseas customers, DesignByThem’s devotees range from design professionals to enthusiasts alike.
Boasting a broad compilation of furniture, accessories and lighting by a chorus of decorated designers, the DesignByThem collection has amassed over 120 products since its genesis. Of the iconic range, a selection was hand-picked to exalt the Show+Tell event. Combining familiar favourites with an exclusive preview of unreleased products, DesignByThem debuted five brand-new designs that are set to be on offer in 2022 and welcomed the introduction of three new designers to the team.
The four-day showcase presented a wonderful opportunity to immerse visitors within the vibrantly tactile world of DesignByThem. “There were so many things that excited us about this event,” explains Sarah. “We have a great following in Melbourne, and it was really nice to finally meet people we’ve been emailing for years.” With pieces peppered throughout the exhibit, exploration throughout the space was encouraged. Encompassing the quirky and vivid to demure and grounding, Show+Tell’s collection proudly presented a generous spectrum of design capabilities.
The unveiling of yet-to-be-seen creations included Rhys Cooper’s blithely interactive Buoy Room Dividers, Elliat Rich’s fantastically fringed Weaver Cabinet, Danielah Martinez’s uniquely spritely Overlay Rugs and Gibson Karlo’s impactful stackable Twill Chair. “User feedback is an imperative part of the design process,” says Nicholas. “Being able to hear the thoughts of our client’s pre-release of these products is incredibly helpful for us. It’s been great working with the new designers who come from all different design disciplines and crafts. We’re super excited to have them on board and to add these new product categories to the collection.”
In addition to the latest releases, DesignByThem’s beloved classics also made a hearty appearance. Coveted designs such as the award-winning Olio Armchair by Christina Bricknell and Gibson Karlo, Sundae Lounges by Jason Ju and August Lounges by Gibson Karlo infused Show+Tell with a warmly recognisable familiarity. “It’s been a few years of not being able to hold events or travel,” Sarah explains, “so we wanted to make this a big show where clients could get an exclusive sneak peek at new designs, as well as physically see some of the bestsellers.”
Collectively collaborating under the DesignByThem banner, the beating heart of the company is its convergence of Australian designers that band together in-house to invent and craft the brand’s offerings. Reflected in the company name and Show+Tell’s success, DesignByThem champions the harmonious proficiency of Australia’s creative community.
