To celebrate its 90th anniversary, Molteni&C launches a new-generation iteration of its acclaimed VVD Kitchen, recast by visionary creative director Vincent Van Duysen.
Molteni&C was a founding partner of Milan’s Salone del Mobile – a relationship that has lasted more than six decades – so it seemed fitting that the pre-eminent Italian brand opted to relaunch one of its most enduring creations at the 2024 fair: the VVD Kitchen by Molteni&C creative director Vincent Van Duysen.
Since taking the reins at Molteni&C in 2016, the Belgian architect and designer has been the driving force behind a stellar line-up of furniture launches. Noteworthy highlights of the collection include the reissue of seminal Gio Ponti designs as part of the Heritage Collection, and the company’s first outdoor range. To mark Molteni&C’s 90th anniversary, Van Duysen has reconsidered the VVD Kitchen he designed in 2017 – when it won best kitchen at the Elle Deco International Design Awards – taking inspiration from Piero Portaluppi’s Necchi Campiglio Villa. The residence’s restrained opulence is encapsulated in the VVD’s grand yet minimalist design ethos.
Introducing a 150-millimetre-thick Lepanto Red marble countertop signals that the 2024 VVD Kitchen is an altogether more luxurious creature than its predecessor. The coolness of the dramatically hued marble is warmed by other new materials, including Tuscan Brown steel, Midnight Oak melamine and Cappuccino lacquers for panels.
The new-look VVD also has 2700K LED lighting integrated into the range module covers and an integrated snack top with a unique support system that can be adapted to work with other kitchens in the Molteni&C collection. It also features PT40 doors – in a 40- or 50-millimetre thickness, dependent on the chosen hinge – which allow seamless integration into passageways. Available in push, pull and pivot iterations in widths from 600 millimetres for single doors to 2,400 millimetres for doubles, the doors have matching finishes on both sides for unequalled consistency.
The kitchen retains some of the seminal features of the original, albeit modernised for a new generation of customers. These elements include the highly ergonomic aluminium cabinet door available in three striking metallic finishes, terminal panels that imbue the countertops with a distinctive profile, finger recesses that add to the kitchen’s clean-lined aesthetic and highly functional pull-out trays beneath the countertops. In essence, the evolved VVD Kitchen embodies everything the esteemed Italian brand stands for: designs that inhabit the hallowed ground between grandeur and minimalist, innovative materiality and a deep, abiding respect for quality.
