North House by CJH Studio
Melbourne-based interior practice CJH Studio reimagines an Edwardian home as a light- filled sanctuary, tailored to the rhythms of a young family.
Balancing heritage with modern living, the design honours North House’s early 1900s origins while introducing a contemporary sensibility defined by light, space and tranquillity. The home retains the grandeur of its Edwardian facade, preserving a connection to the neighbourhood. A newly relocated, steel-framed front door makes a bold architectural statement, bridging the gap between the dwelling’s different architectural eras. Stepping through the door, one enters a tiled vestibule that leads into the practical, almost utilitarian mudroom, and ultimately, to the heart of the home: the kitchen. With its cleverly concealed storage, twin upholstered banquettes and elegant marble stair capping, this transitory space reflects CJH Studio’s intent for the rest of the home.

The interior embraces a serene, muted palette that enhances the flow of natural light, creating a soft, welcoming atmosphere. Every material has been carefully chosen for its beauty, durability and tactile quality. Natural light becomes the home’s defining element, creating a mesmerising chiaroscuro effect that transforms the interior throughout the day.
The kitchen embodies the home’s design ethos – a space where functionality meets form. A substantial island anchors the room, connecting seamlessly to a light-filled butler’s pantry. Custom joinery with a modern shaker profile, finished in a soft, sage-green hue, complements the natural textures of limewash walls and marble benchtops. In the dining area, an Anna Charlesworth plaster pendant hovers above a dining table by Daniel Boddam and chairs by De La Espada.

Separated from the kitchen by the dining room, the living room fosters both calm and togetherness, connecting effortlessly to the outdoor entertaining area via steel-framed doors. A marble fireplace anchors the space, offering a contemporary counterpoint to the mid-century furniture arranged atop a peach rug.
The private spaces mirror this balance of detail and function. In the primary bedroom, a serene colour scheme is complemented by tactile, leather-topped joinery, while the ensuite exudes sophistication with limestone tiles, a marble-clad bath and mirrored surfaces that amplify light. The powder room delights with a custom Calacatta Viola stone sink – a playful yet sculptural touch amid the plaster walls. Even the stairwell, with its minimalist handrail and patchwork-material landing, serves as an ode to artistry.
North House embodies CJH Studio’s considered approach to design, where light, materiality and volume intersect to create a space that feels both timeless and renewed.
