Featuring crisp, neutral colours and finely curved forms, Nuebelle deeply emphasises a connection to the landscape and surrounding coastlines through Olea’s form.

Entered at ground level, Olea exudes a relaxed sentiment that is respectful to its coastal surrounds. Acting as architect, interior designer and landscape designer, Stratton Thomas, director at Nuebelle, has created a family home suited to his family’s needs. Originally inspired to create a house for himself that “would be appreciated in its locality and speak to its surrounding coastlines”, the home, while thoughtful to the occupants, becomes “an extension of the local beaches, restaurants and parks”.

For the material palette, Nuebelle includes Indiana white limestone floors, aged brass fixtures, Calacatta Viola marble in the kitchen and bathrooms and textured venetian plaster walls throughout. Additionally, a neutral colour palette complements the home’s location and family’s laid-back approach to living and connecting to their surrounds. While calming, the dwelling’s character pulls from an “Australian modern coastal [style] with European-inspired materials and finishes while also being connected to outdoors,” says Thomas.

Nuebelle has embraced an open plan to suit the family’s needs. “Having an open plan [with] all the spaces being connected in some way meant we could have a lot of quality time together,” says Thomas. As such, the floor plan opens up from the kitchen through sliding doors to bring the outside in and allows entertaining late into the evenings. “We wanted to blur the line between indoors and outdoors by keeping the family connected when using the different zones,” explains Thomas. Moreso, the home caters to beachside lifestyle by giving the occupants an alfresco living area to relax in after leaving the beach. Olea also features a large yard for the children to play in, a pool and an open fire pit for the cooler winter nights.

Inside, the structure has been shielded across the facade with screens, allowing the owners complete privacy from the street when in their private spaces. While designed as a summer-time family home, Olea instead became a holiday oasis year-round with respectful architecture, interior design and decor that complements its coastal surrounds.
