Onda by State of Kin
Interdisciplinary design practice State of Kin has transformed a dilapidated Perth bungalow, Onda, into a curvaceous, modern home defined by sleek interiors and a highly functional, fluid layout.
Set in the riverside suburb of Perth’s Attadale, the home called for a much-needed transformation. Rather than starting from scratch, State of Kin kept the existing architectural shell, reimagining it with a sculptural exterior of sweeping curves and softened edges. A minimal, neutral palette allows this form to take centrestage, while scalloped vertical accents, pale brown Art Deco-esque joinery and pops of green landscaping add texture and colour.
Inside, the designer has broken through the home’s formerly compartmentalised layout, removing internal walls to create a seamless spatial flow. This sense of continuity is heightened by curved edges that mirror the sculptural exterior. The colour palette is also pared back, with warm timber and natural stone used throughout, while green furnishings and cabinetry provide fresh accents.
While circulation is intended to be easy and intuitive, each space retains a sense of stillness – achieved through variations in the floor height, materiality and the placing of carefully selected furniture pieces. As a case in point, the living room sits on an elevated floor above the kitchen, accessed via wave-like steps that lend the space a sense of retreat. Here, an olive-green leather Sengu sofa by Cassina sits beneath an organically shaped oval window, bisected by a display shelf. Originality is further reinforced by a Réaction Poétique coffee table, also by Cassina.
Limestone crazy paving adds a nice texture underfoot in many areas of the home, its natural coolness offset by timber panelling and metal accents. The kitchen echoes the exterior, with wavy cabinetry and a central island finished with a metal-framed toe kick detail. Located directly off the front entry, these main living areas create a welcoming landing zone for family life and social gatherings.
City views are a constant presence, both inside and out, with sheltered outdoor dining and lounging areas designed to flow effortlessly from the interior. A resort-style pool is paired with curved, built-in bench seating, perfect for summer entertaining. Integrating with both the home and landscape, tropical pops of greenery are tucked into built-in planter boxes to flow over and around the architecture, which beautifully completes the look of this contemporary transformation.
