Paddington Residence by Hecker Guthrie
Holding onto its heritage bones, Paddington Residence by Hecker Guthrie is a sensitive restoration grounded in intricate craftsmanship, muted tones and a Japanese-inspired style.
Nestled on the leafy, quaint streets of Paddington in inner-eastern Sydney, the home blends into the locale’s vernacular with its cultivated feel, sophisticated approach and heritage terrace facade. Beyond retaining the original arched windows and lacework balustrade, the brief called for a design that balances Victorian-era charm with contemporary sensibilities to enhance natural light and spatial flow.
Upon stepping inside, what immediately stands out is the refined palette of muted tones, which take one on a journey as they move through the rooms. At first, darker hues in the formal living room create a sense of intimacy and moodiness, before transitioning to lighter tones in the main corridor that build a sense of spaciousness. Meanwhile, timber flooring and beige tiles ground the design by adding a warm, natural element.
The journey continues in the kitchen, where the lightness is replaced by tactility. Here, richly stained timbers of the custom joinery and handmade Zellige tiles evoke a distinct Japanese style. This is enhanced by the thoughtful placement of unique ceramics and other furniture, merging functionality and artistry in equal measure.
This considered approach extends to the overall experience of the home, where Japanese-inspired tones and intricate elements add a sense of ritual to each space. One is encouraged to stop and observe every small detail, analyse every ceramic mug and bowl, glimpse every artwork and slowly consider the beauty found in each piece of furniture.
Hecker Guthrie’s love of intricacies and immersive moments elevates the Paddington Residence into an experience that is as much about ritual as it is about daily living.
