After years of neglect and poor renovation efforts, Paddington T2 is stripped back to its core and reinvigorated through a considered and enduring lens. Scott Weston Architecture Design focuses on recalibrating the entire site and reactivating the private outdoor space as an extension of the home proper.

A delicate balance between preserving heritage and embracing a more contemporary liveability, Paddington T2 is reworked entirely after falling into disrepair. Located in the heart of its namesake suburb, the multi-level home remained a typical example of its type – long and narrow, with very little access to natural light. With a priority to expand the interior volumes and create more meaningful and purpose-driven connections, the team brought in light from above and added an open living zone at the rear. Using an approach that bridges the ornateness of the original and more subtle moments from the modern context, Scott Weston Architectural Design reinvigorates the old gem for contemporary living.

Having undergone renovations that shut off the interior from the rear courtyard space, the new volume is opened to the outdoor area and is embedded with flowing movement. Needing to navigate services and stormwater issues that confused boundaries between neighbours also came into consideration and was approached with a fresh set of eyes. As the home is considered a contributor to the heritage character of the area, specific guidelines were to be adhered to. By way of a grand gesture to open up the interior spaces, the existing roof to the rear was removed and an open plan addition – containing a newly defined kitchen, living and dining area – was created.

With a new, seamless connection to the interior, the previously forgotten outdoor space is given a new purpose. The landscape and integration of the natural elements played a key role within the new design of the home. Three bedrooms sit tucked away among the more open and flowing communal spaces, with the living area also able to be converted into an additional guest sleeping area if needed. The planning and custom integration of joinery across the site ensures every insertion has been considered. Allowing the spaces to feel more open comes with the associated integration of storage throughout, where the architecture becomes multi-functional yet remains unobtrusive.

In the renovation of Paddington T2, Scott Weston Architectural Design works within the constraints of the site to craft a modern home. Existing amid a contemporary setting whilst being both inviting and secluded from the busy streetscape, the residence is reinvigorated for modern living.
