Drawing from the balanced qualities of its owners, Palladiana Party sees harmonious gestures of contrast breathe new life into the generous heritage home. Combining architecture by Powell and Glenn together with interior design by Sally Caroline, a playful integration of colour and form connect the past and present.

Nestled into Melbourne’s Bayside, Palladiana Party draws on the home’s original 1930s origins to craft the present and projected narrative of the home. In the combining of the old and new, the ornate and the more simplified sees a natural balance emerge, one that references the styles of its owners and their own contrasting personalities. Through an extension of the original home, an open and connected living space is created that then feeds into the carefully curated landscape surrounds by Myles Baldwin Design. While the new elements draw on the formality of the existing, the home is brought together through a shared sense of purpose and an animated palette that runs through and binds the elements of the home. Powell and Glenn and Sally Caroline combine to ensure due respect is paid to the home’s heritage and to reinforce that the new feels like a natural and refined evolution.

A matched symmetry and formality extend beyond the original home, and into the new, marking it as a clear pillar of the resulting spaces and forms proposed.

Spread over two levels and built by Lowther, Palladiana Party extends the existing masonry exterior fabric of the home out into the landscape and becomes deeper immersed within the garden. A matched symmetry and formality extend beyond the original and into the new, marking it as a clear pillar of the resulting spaces and forms proposed. As its namesake, the Palladiana deep green marble in the kitchen is a statement and anchor of the home. As the convening centre around which all other areas connect, the kitchen brings residents and guests together and forms the heart of the contemporary home. Choosing to showcase such an expressive material then forms the foundation for the surrounding spaces.

Combining quality and longevity, enduring elements such as stone and rich parquetry timber flooring all speak to the existing narrative of the home and its handmade past. The new insertions of rich layers see deep and saturated hues all combine to add character and personality internally, while being expressed through more interchangeable elements such as furniture, lighting and artwork. The original bones of the home and its extension remain ornate, while the sculptural pieces dotted throughout add vibrancy and a sense of movement.

The combined use of colour and texture in Palladiana Party brings the previous home into a present freshness. Powell and Glenn and Sally Caroline use boldness to express character and the provision of its future chapters.
