Reinterpreting The Traditional Queenslander – Park Road by Lineburg Wang

Drawing on the language and structural attributes of the humble pool fence, Lineburg Wang’s Park Road reimagines an existing Queenslander for a client who sought to live outdoors as much as possible.

Located in Brisbane, nestled into the fabric of existing and new Queenslander homes, the bones of this two-storey abode needed an overhaul and sense of contemporary relevance instilled. Together with their client, Lineburg Wang devised an overall masterplan to readdress the site and create a home that spoke to the client’s outdoor-focused lifestyle. The concept for the renovation works of Park Road thus centred around being outdoors, on the home as a gathering place, and on the beauty of having a diffused boundary between inside and out. From careful study of the existing elements and the need for a fence around the pool, the idea to embrace the pool fence and its rhythmic formal language was cemented and implemented in various iterations.

Casting its own net of sorts to the north of the home, the pool fence structure bounds the pool and terrace areas, which is then softened by purposeful various plantings.

Built by Struss Constructions, together with landscaping by Boss Gardenscapes, the new works sit within the existing footprint of the home. Located on an expansive 2,200 square-metre corner suburban block, the ambition was for the home to better connect with the site and embrace the established significant gum trees, the lap pool and tennis court and also be a place to facilitate socialising en masse. The lightness of the steel structured fence is counterbalanced by the block massing of the home, where a similar structure offers screening, dappled light and privacy.

The many interventions see the previous grand home injected with a contemporary overlay. In place of its previously disconnected state, an overall sense of gathering is used to arrange internal spaces and inform the connection to the outdoor terraces and garden elements. While much of the ornamentation and detailing was removed from the existing house, the proportions are retained and instead a contemporary interpretation of mouldings are applied as a nod to the past. The material palette speaks to the enduring robustness of an outdoor home, and its clean lines and restraint in minimal and timeless finishes ensure it has a continued relevance.

Interpreting the client’s outdoor lifestyle through a contemporary architectural lens, Park Road sees Lineburg Wang transform the existing grand home into an equally impressive and relevant home for its owners.
