Park St by SGKS Arch
Art Deco meets industrial precision in this vibrant and exuberant family home, where colour serves as a powerful tool to create cohesion and balance.
Park St by SGKS Arch, a St Kilda-based architecture and design house, is a rare gem in modern design. Deeply rooted in the local community – with both the property and the firm located in the same suburb – the home carries an added layer of connection and individuality. In a unique twist, the principal architect was also the client, blurring the lines between creator and inhabitant. This collaboration allowed for a level of creative freedom and experimentation not often seen, resulting in a home that honours St Kilda’s eclectic history while embracing a timeless modernity that will never go out of style.
Before you even step through the front door, the exterior offers a glimpse of the design language within. The building’s facade showcases the same Art Deco curves echoed throughout the interior. Nestled behind modest greenery, the liberal use of concrete and a monochromatic black-and-white palette gives the residence a discreet, tucked-away feel. An oversized teal front door adds a surprising pop of colour, welcoming visitors with a sense of intrigue and individuality – the only hint that something extraordinary awaits inside.
The dwelling’s varied influences are on full display throughout. The industrial minimalism of polished concrete floors and ceilings contrasts beautifully with the bold, fluid curves of the Art Deco-inspired interiors, resulting in multiple examples of design-led features that proudly serve as showpieces. Yet rather than competing, these distinct elements complement each other, working in harmony to establish a sense of balance. The sculptural steel staircase adds another layer of intrigue, bridging the gap between functionality and art.
The clever integration of vintage-inspired details with contemporary craftsmanship ensures the home feels both timeless and forward-thinking.
Inside, the deliberate use of colour becomes strikingly evident. Bright, unapologetic hues mix with delicate pastels, creating stand-out moments of contrast throughout. From the deep, calming green of the kitchen to the scattered electric blues, colour acts as a unifying thread, allowing the home’s personality to shine. The burnt orange sunken lounge is a true highlight, inviting guests to leave their worries behind as they sink into this cleverly crafted nook. Meanwhile, soft peach tones provide gentle moments of warmth, offering a perfect counterbalance to the home’s bolder features.
Every room in Park St tells a bold, unique story. From freestanding modern bathtubs nestled within retro red-and-white-tiled bathrooms to light fixtures designed to look as if they’ve fallen haphazardly from the ceiling, and sleek, curved furniture used throughout, the home is a celebration of individuality. Unapologetically maximalist, it embraces bold self-expression at every turn. The clever integration of vintage-inspired details with contemporary craftsmanship ensures the home feels both timeless and forward-thinking. A space like this can be many things – but boring is not one of them.
