As the design industry increases its calls for customisation, Plyroom answers. Adding American oak to its statement Australian-made collection, Plyroom continues to champion hand-finished and sustainably forested timbers and provides a gateway to slow living.

Taking inspiration from the restrained language of midcentury modernism – alongside the purposeful approach underpinning shaker-style furniture – Plyroom designs thoughtful works with contemporary form. The company follows a singular conception of minimalism that sees focus placed firmly on only the most beloved objects, which are then retained by the user. As a result, the experience of minimalism proposed by Plyroom is one of fulfilment as much as simplicity. Aligning with the minimalist agenda, each product is crafted with function and adaptability in mind, solidified in its status as a treasured and necessary object in the home. Environmental awareness is a vital aspect of the Plyroom brand and all products from the company are comprised of sustainably sourced materials. The ethical nature of the enterprise is strongly represented across its operations, including its choice of collaborators – restricted to those who share the company values – its design process, manufacturing and delivery.

An intuitive addition to the Plyroom collection, American oak is a robust timber with an elevated appearance. At the hands of skilled Australian craftspeople, the material takes the form of elegant furniture and accessories, including Plyroom Cabine Sideboard and Scrivette Desk (above). Complementing most other neutral and warm-toned timbers, American oak can uplift any interior design scheme with a prominent, fine grain that imbues spaces with an innate sense of detail. Plyroom offers customers the opportunity to receive samples of American oak to observe the timber on the site of their project and, whether it be by interacting with natural light or providing a layer of texture, demonstrates how the wood functions efficiently within internal environments. Similarly, the complete range of American oak furniture can be experienced in person at Plyroom’s light-filled showroom in Northcote.

Slow Bed and Big Nest are among the many Plyroom products to feature American oak. The resulting bedframe is visually restrained, utilising comforting colour and simple form to encourage the practice of mindfulness. Capable of withstanding the test of time, the durable wood sees the bedframe embody the value of sustainability whilst a satin plant-based wax ensures the longevity of the ethically sourced timber.

Expressing a similar sentiment to Slow Bed, Big Nest embraces the utilitarian nature of mid-century design. Made to order, the wall-mounted floating cabinet contains a generous-sized cavity, concealed by two sliding doors that can be arranged for semi-open storage. If an alternate aesthetic is desired, the timber doors can be removed entirely. Whilst the product can be wall-mounted or placed directly onto the floor, it can also be purchased with a removable base to form a freestanding cabinet. Cable holes, shelving and a central divider can also be added upon request.

Sustainably forested and locally made, Plyroom’s Australian collection marries solid ethical values with customisable modern design. The addition of American oak sees the Plyroom package grow in diversity, offering a greater investment into the future of minimal living.
