Q8 Residence by MRDK
Nestled at the foot of a hill in Quebec’s Mont Tremblant region, Q8 Residence by MRDK presents a compelling narrative of contemporary design amid a wooded landscape. The nuanced design approach deftly marries modern architectural principles, at once sheltering and connecting its inhabitants to the surrounds.
Q8 Residence unfolds along an east-west axis, its form articulated through a series of staggered volumes, a direct response to the topography and orientation of the site. Each volume is distinguished by its cladding, creating a dynamic facade resonating with the surrounding forest of birch, maple and pine trees. Approaching from the north, one encounters a closed facade with minimal openings, a deliberate strategy not only ensuring privacy but also contributing to thermal performance during Quebec’s harsh winters. The austere entry gives way to a more open aspect as the building unfolds, with generous glazing to the southern facade designed to encourage natural light deep into the interior and frame views of the lush surroundings. A distinctive fold at the midpoint of the form creates a welcoming threshold, while the second floor cantilevers to shelter a porch at the eastern end.
Spatial planning focuses on the creation of fluid, connected living spaces as evidenced in the unfolding of the ground floor plane, revealing one soaring volume containing kitchen, dining and living spaces. Enhancing this sense of volume and openness are interior windows, which punctuate the walls of the double-height space, allowing light to permeate upstairs rooms and establishing visual connection between levels.
The primary suite is located on the ground floor to enhance privacy and accessibility, opening onto a semi-private terrace with an outdoor shower shielded by a boulder unearthed during excavation. Above, the upper volume focuses on additional accommodation, with a reading nook overlooking living below, inviting relaxation and contemplation.
Larch wood, dark and light-stained pine veneer, white walls and lime wash combine to create a warm, inviting atmosphere to complement the natural beauty visible through the expansive glazing.
Externally, the composition is carefully considered, with white cedar shingles lending a light, natural texture to one volume, while warm larch vertical cladding introduces rich, earthy tones to another. A garden wall of horizontal board-formed concrete adds a contemporary edge, creating a dialogue between the built form and its natural setting. The material palette throughout the interior mirrors the exterior finishes, creating a cohesive aesthetic, reinforcing connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. With its sophisticated interplay of materials, thoughtful spatial planning and seamless integration with the landscape, Q8 Residence by MRDK is a crafted dwelling that responds sensitively to its site and offers a profound connection to the beauty of the surroundings.
