Magnus Wästberg founded his eponymous lighting company in 2008 with a philosophy inspired by a quote from the Swiss-German artist Paul Klee: “One eye sees, the other feels.” It provides the context for what the brand has been creating over the past 16 years: lighting that is not just technically and functionally superior but where aesthetics and emotionality are equally considered.

“All too often, lamps possess either one or the other, very seldom both. And many times none,” explained Wästberg in a recent interview. “We are very interested in technology, but never as a goal, always as a means. What is technically possible is not always humanly preferable. For us, true innovation means making the effort to find the best solutions, putting equal effort into both the measurable and the immeasurable.”

Wellbeing might be at the centre of the Wästberg ethos, but sustainability is another core value. Nowhere is that clearer than in the brand’s latest collection, Raw, which rethinks 10 lamps from its vast and impressive inventory. Available exclusively in Australia through Euroluce, the lamps – all variants of new or existing best-selling pieces in the Wästberg range — are made of either brushed, tumbled or polished raw aluminium, with no extra finishes or coatings.

“The Raw collection doesn’t necessarily come out of current aesthetical tendencies,” Wästberg says. “The raw finish pairs a dedication to honest, traditionally crafted materials with an aspiration to provide more sustainable options. It allows for more resource-efficient production, easier recycling and – not least – a graceful ageing process.”

“From the beginning, the lamps’ naturally textured surface has a rich and tactile depth, with any marks from the production process only adding to their character,” he continues.

The classic conical w151 Extra-Large Pendant, w221 Medium Pendant and w201Extra-Small Pendant – co-created with Swedish studio Claesson Koivisto Rune – take on a stunning, sleek new form in raw aluminium. As do the seven other pieces that have been reformulated in this striking new unfinished and understated iteration: the w227 Winkel, w225 Ion and w224 Alto, all developed with Dirk Winkel; the w171 Alma by Tham & Videgård; David Chipperfield’s w222 Focal and new portable hybrid w241 Faro; and Sam Hecht and Kim Colin’s recent update of the w162 Dalston.

With collaborators of that calibre creating such beautifully considered lighting – where aesthetics, world-leading technology and the conservation of resources all have equal weight – it’s no surprise that Wästberg has earned myriad prestigious awards and continues to draw a dedicated customer base who recognise true artistry at work.
