Warmly Robust – Residence R by Enoki
A reimagining from the inside out, Residence R blends effortlessly between old and new while focusing views and movement outward into the surrounding landscape and natural elements. Enoki draws from the outer shell of the home as inspiration for the resultingly robust and engaging series of spaces within, aptly fit for family life with embedded flexibility throughout.
Contained to the existing structure to define the parameters of the renovation, Residence R sees the reshaping of a generously scaled family home to optimise the already established and lofted interior volumes to suit its next chapter. A keen focus on the outdoors and ensuring the surrounding elements were seen able to be accessed from within was key to the overall brief and approach. Emphasising openings and access, along with the ability to traverse across thresholds between inside and out, directed the orientation of placements and resulting functionality. Engaged to focus on key shared areas and a select private few, the new works see Enoki allow for the facilitation of anticipated change over the years to come.
The use texture and tactile elements then encourages an interaction with them, while adding a level of warmth at the same time.
While a strategic reworking of the planning aligns certain areas and enhances the spaces with better connections outward, overlaying a more considered sense of separation was also key. Built by Capital PM Pty Ltd, Residence R centres on creating warm and inviting spaces that feel approachable and familiar in their own ways, while also feeling connected to one another. The use texture and tactile elements then encourages an interaction with them, adding a level of warmth at the same time. Although a base of long wearing materials such as the polished concrete flooring aims to absorb the knocks of its many occupants, the combination with timber and terracotta adds a suppleness and connection to the nearby natural.
Balanced by a blanket of white throughout, the existing structure is bound by a cloaking of similar tones, with new insertions expressed through contrasting materiality. With the kitchen as a core space within the home, both socially and for personal interactions, the level of detail and personalisation becomes an expression of how the owners intend to occupy the home. Dedicated seating sits elevated at the end of an oversized island bench, as a more casual space to eat, entertain and connect. The terracotta herringbone flooring further expresses a hardiness needed within a home yet adds a more artisanal touch.
