Positioned at the lively intersection of Richmond’s Church Street and Bridge Road, Richmond Traders – a collaborative venture by SJB and NH Architecture – is a vibrant urban village. Beyond revitalising an underutilised supermarket and shopping mall, the project incorporates 368 build-to-rent dwellings, aiming to craft a thriving urban enclave that elevates social, environmental and economic conditions for the local community.

Spanning an expansive 12,000 square metres, Richmond Traders adeptly maximises its space. On the ground level, revitalised street frontages and newly introduced laneways converge to shape an integrated and energetic public realm. SJB and NH Architecture’s collaborative efforts culminate in a lively market hall, offering elevated retail opportunities for local traders alongside a comprehensive full-line supermarket.

Within the set-back residential towers, designed by SJB, discreet clusters of apartments gracefully address the scale of Church Street. At Home Richmond, tenants enjoy spacious one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, customisable to individual tastes, including the freedom to paint walls or bring pets. The design philosophy balances refined and minimal residential spaces with shared fitness facilities that come alive with vibrant colours and ample volume, creating a dynamic backdrop for a thriving social network.

Inspired by Richmond’s industrial and period buildings, the project incorporates face brickwork, corbelled columns and aperture proportions on the ground and podium levels. This integration extends to a long-life interior language, facilitating low-cost and low-impact transitions for tenants. Residential structures, influenced by the area’s industrial heritage, feature sawtooth metal roofs atop robust, textural concrete forms. This meticulous blend of historical cues and modern design showcases a commitment to Richmond’s architectural legacy.

Richmond Traders demonstrates the potential of build-to- rent properties in Australia’s dense metro regions, emphasising the value of amenities to the market. With novel retail and commercial spaces and secure, high-end apartments, the project is an impressive offering to the local community, reshaping the landscape with thoughtful design and purposeful intent.
