With Dwell, Melbourne-based designer Ross Gardam has created a minimal and elegant modular lounge system that speaks to the way people work, live and gather today.

Designed and made in Melbourne after two years in development, Dwell is Ross Gardam’s sophisticated modular lounge system built for moments of connection or quiet focus. Its clean architectural lines and refined detailing make Dwell easy to adapt to different spaces – from offices and homes to hotel lobbies. Gardam’s inspiration for the range struck at an unlikely time. “I was in Sydney in 2023 for the INDE.Awards, where we were lucky enough to win The Object category with the Méne luminaire,” he recalls. “I stayed a few extra days at the Ace Hotel and locked myself away and created the basis of the collection.”

“The studio has been working in this sector for a decade now, and throughout that time, we have learned so much in the development phases. That being said, I think we have learnt even more from how architects and designers have used the pieces in projects and also some of the custom solutions we have created to address request.” Gardam says “Development of the piece was over a 2-year period. I remember as I was in Sydney for the Inde Awards are we were lucky enough to win the object section with Mene. I stayed a few extra days at the Ace hotel and locked myself away and created the bases of the Dwell collection.”

The modular components connect along a sleek, central rail system, giving the collection its signature linear silhouette.

What makes Dwell so special is its flexibility. The modular components connect along a sleek, central rail system, giving the collection its signature linear silhouette while also allowing it to be easily modified. Corner settings, clusters, linear runs or even island-like layouts can all be configured from the same system, making it highly versatile for contemporary interiors. Whether for a compact breakout zone or expansive lounge area, the pieces come together effortlessly.

This functionality goes beyond the seating itself. Integrated or freestanding tables can be added to create useful surfaces where needed. Powerpoints and data access are also discreetly mounted below the seat, offering an easy way to stay connected.

Craft, comfort and quality are at the heart of the collection. Dwell’s cushions are made with layered foam, which offer a balance of softness and support. There’s a wide range of upholstery options to choose from – including wool, leather and textured weaves – in colours such as rich burgundy, deep green, muted blue and soft neutrals. The steel rail can also be customised with matte black or white powder-coated finishes to suit different interior palettes.

With its clever design, sleek, minimal look and endless versatility, Dwell reflects Ross Gardam’s commitment to creating furniture that is refined, functional and completely in tune with how we live and work today.

The range also reflects the studio’s close ties with the A&D community. “We have been working in this sector for a decade now,” says Gardam, “and throughout that time, we have learned so much in the development phases. That being said, I think we have learned even more from how architects and designers have used our pieces in projects, and from the custom solutions we have created to address their requests.”
