San Francisco Proper by Kelly Wearstler
Vibrant, bold and captivating, San Francisco Proper redefines the timeless concept of luxurious, high-end hotels.
The hotel occupies a 1904 Beaux Arts-era flatiron building in the historic Mid-Market neighbourhood, just a short walk away from the Theatre District, shopping centre, museums and dining. Originally conceived by Albert Pissis, an architect credited for introducing Beaux Arts architecture to the city, the space has been carefully reimagined by Kelly Wearstler. The thoughtful rejuvenation of the interior not only honours the building’s storied past but also captures the bustling energy of San Francisco.
Inside, guests can discover a versatile experience, offering dining, fitness, relaxation, workspaces and social opportunities. Amenities include a fitness centre, meeting and event spaces and 131 rooms and suites. The hotel also boasts a rooftop bar showcasing panoramic city views, a sophisticated lobby restaurant and a ground-floor tapas bar alongside a European market.
Restoring the hotel was a delicate balancing act, where Wearstler blends the old with the new. From the street, the original narrow brick facade remains unchanged, preserving its historic charm. Inside, iconic period features like high ceilings and intricate wall detailing are retained, complemented by vibrant artworks crafted with centuries-old techniques. Wearstler expertly juxtaposes San Francisco’s heritage with contemporary elements, layering vintage European furnishings with modern geometric shapes and organic floral motifs.
A unifying element across all rooms is the abundance of natural light and stunning city vistas.
The material palette of brick, marble and terracotta sets the tone, complemented by an array of artworks and bold contrasts that define each room with distinct hues. Throughout the hotel, statement features abound, from geometric lighting fixtures to exotic wallpapers. The meeting and event spaces exude refinement, characterised by clean lines and neutral tones. At San Francisco Proper, every guestroom and suite is a unique creation, featuring diverse patterns, colours and eclectic furniture arrangements that blend eras. However, a unifying element across all rooms is the abundance of natural light and stunning city vistas.
Injecting her signature multifaceted and experiential style, Wearstler has designed a hotel that is as eclectic as it is dynamic, evoking memories of creative salons, lively gatherings and the rich history of San Francisco. San Francisco Proper goes beyond the conventional hotel experience; it radiates energy, remaining elegant and inviting.
